About Emma
Emma Woods was a vibrant and talented young woman, deeply passionate about photography
and a dedicated student at the University of East London.
Tragically, Emma passed away at the age of 20. In her memory, her family and friends have raised over £30,000 to support the Turner Syndrome Support Society (TSSS [UK]) in raising awareness of the condition in Emma’s memory.
Purpose of the Fund
The funds raised in Emma’s name will enable TSSS [UK] to launch a series of dedicated
awareness campaigns around Turner Syndrome. These campaigns officially launched on
21 June 2024 (to coincide with TS Awareness Day).
Emma was passionate about encouraging early diagnosis. The aim is to reach new audiences and provide essential information to families who may otherwise remain unaware of the condition.
Planned Campaigns
1. Emma Woods Memorial Butterfly Award – new for 2024, applications for
nominations of this year’s award are now open. Read more about the award categories here.
2. Social Media Awareness Campaigns:
Utilising platforms like Facebook and
Instagram to raise awareness of Turner Syndrome and share Emma’s story.
3. National Photography Competition:
Celebrating Emma’s love for photography, this
competition will engage the public and raise awareness through visual storytelling.
4. Awareness Activations:
Hosting events and activities designed to educate and inform
about Turner Syndrome, ensuring Emma’s legacy inspires and supports others.
Turner Syndrome Facts
Turner Syndrome affects 1 in every 2000 baby girls born. However, less than a third are diagnosed early
enough for treatment. Leaving many girls not diagnosed and missing out on the treatment that can help
them. Emma was 13 before she was diagnosed.
Early diagnosis and support can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected, for example, accessing appropriate treatment such as growth hormone, preventative health screening for heart and bone health.

committed to overseeing these awareness campaigns to honour Emma’s memory and to make
a lasting impact in the lives of girls and their families affected by Turner Syndrome.
